So I have been knocked over by the flu, which is why I haven't picked up the Hikaru-Touya post from the other day, but WHILE being knocked over by the flu, I went browsing for the new HnG manga covers. Because in 2009 the entire series was re-released as "Hikaru no Go Complete Edition", in 20 volumes, with new/updated Obata cover art so they are naturally gorgeous. But hard to track down!

They turned out to all be on the website for the complete edition by means of refreshing random banner ads, which not only did

lucathia_rykatu inform me of, but she also uploaded them for me so I wouldn't have to go through the constant reloading process she did. ♥ Thank you again!

I've reuploaded them so they're in more than one spot, and they are behind this cut. /o/~

Gorgeous art. It conveys Touya's complete inability to dress himself very well.

I downloaded like 90 doujin scanlations the other day and I swear a good half of them make fun of Touya's clothing. I'm glad that this is one trope English and Japanese fandom are united in.

I wonder if the clothes were dictated or Obata just decided to be a beautiful bastard on his own.

I like to imagine a combination. Fromw hat I've seen it seems like Hotta and Obata mostly communicated through Hotta's editor (who was a huge troll judging by that one Ogata panel -- have you heard this story?) and so I imagine it went something like, "Tell Obata-sensei to draw Akira with bad fashion sense" and Obata was like [CRACKS KNUCKLES]

No! ... probably yes but it's been so long that I've probably forgotten. DO TELL, DO TELL.

ok well you know the scene where Ogata's leaving his apartment and has a conversation with one of his ladies that is like

"Hey Seiji I am cheering you on."
"Whatever bitch you don't even know what you're cheering for."
"Whatever! You had fun, didn't you?"
"I have more fun playing Go."

A few volumes later Hotta has one of those author talk pages and has that panel in it, and her note is something like (paraphrased):

"So when I was sending the script for this scene over, I asked my editor to tell Obata-sensei to please keep the visuals for it subtle, and it was okay if the viewers didn't understand what was going on here. Only then the book comes out, and I see that the editor has added this caption over the panel:

OGATA AND THE ADULT LIFESTYLE."
